Our comprehensive 4WD Off-Road Training Course is designed to better equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge to confidently navigate diverse off-road terrains. Whether your staff are new to off-road driving or have some off-road driving skills aiming to improve their expertise and confidence, our course offers tailored instruction to meet your team’s needs.

Course Objectives:

  • Hazard Recognition: Develop the ability to identify potential off-road hazards and obstacles.
  • Terrain Analysis: Learn to assess and navigate various terrains, including rocky trails, mud, sand, and water crossings.
  • Vehicle Operation: Master techniques for driving a 4WD vehicle in challenging conditions, focusing on appropriate acceleration, braking, and steering.
  • Recovery Techniques: Acquire skills in self-recovery and assisting others using tools like winches, recovery straps, and traction aids in a safe manner.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Understand responsible off-road practices to minimize environmental impact and preserve natural landscapes.

Course Content

  1. Introduction to 4WD Systems:
    • Understanding basic 4WD mechanics and functionalities (traction control, hill decent, diff lock options).
    • Differentiating between 4WD and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) systems.
  2. Pre-Drive Vehicle Inspection:
    • Conducting comprehensive vehicle checks before off-road excursions.
    • Assessing tire condition (what’s safe, tread depth, tire pattern – high way, all terrain, mud terrain, etc… and tire pressure), fluid levels, and essential equipment.
  3. Basic Driving Techniques:
    • Navigating hill ascents and descents safely.
    • Traversing side slopes with confidence.
    • Approaching and overcoming obstacles effectively.
  4. Advanced Driving Techniques:
    • Managing water crossings.
    • Driving on challenging surfaces such as sand, mud, and snow.
    • Using advanced features like differential locks and traction control systems.
  5. Vehicle Recovery and Maintenance:
    • Performing safe operations (including winch) and recovery procedures.
    • Maintaining your vehicle to ensure longevity and reliability.
  6. Navigation and Communication:
    • Employing GPS and traditional navigation methods in off-road settings.
    • Utilising radio communication protocols for group travel.

Training Methodology

Our training can combine theoretical classroom sessions (which can include unit standards) with practical, hands-on driving experiences. Participants will engage in real-world scenarios under the guidance of experienced instructors, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of off-road driving principles.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course, participants may receive a certificate (or if applicable a unit standard qualification) acknowledging their proficiency in off-road 4WD operation.

Equipment Requirements

  • A well-maintained 4WD vehicle suitable for off-road conditions.
  • Personal protective equipment, including sturdy footwear and gloves.

  • Basic recovery equipment your company or organisation already own (e.g., tow straps, shackles).
